Gold Plated Helm Of Awe

Brand:Asgard

In recent years “Aegishjalmr”, the Helm of Awe, has become an iconic symbol tied into the magic of runes. However, the earliest depiction of this symbol was in the 17th Century Icelandic grimoire, Galdrabok.

The term “Aegishjalmr” is mentioned in the Volsung Saga, but with no description or explanation of what it is. Today it is believed to protect the wearer from harm.

It measures 55mm x 47mm, and weighs around 41g.

Gilding, or gold plating, was carried out on many jewellery items in the Viking age, using the mercury gilding process. This piece has a 1micron thick layer of gold, plated over pewter, to give an attractive representation of what some of these Viking age pieces may have looked like when they were first made.

It is cast in lead free pewter in Scotland, then gold plated, and comes with a length of black cord.

Here at Asgard we have one passion: Vikings!

We've spent thousands of hours over the last twenty years studying Viking period artefacts. We've honed our experimental archaeology skills to work out how things were made 1000 years ago, and applied that to the replica Viking items we hand make in Scotland.
